10 Surprising Things That Can Raise Your Blood Sugar

When you first learned you had diabetes, you checked your blood sugar often. Doing so will help you understand how diet, activity, stress and illness can affect your blood sugar levels. By now, you've figured it out for the most part. But then - bam! Some make your blood sugar spike. You try to adjust it with food or activity or insulin, and it really gets low. You're on a roller coaster that nobody with diabetes wants to ride.

Knowledge is strength! Watch for these surprising triggers that can cause your blood sugar to spike:

Sunburn - Pain causes stress and stress raises blood sugar levels.

Artificial Sweeteners - More research is needed, but some studies show they may raise blood sugar.

Coffee—even without the sweetener. Some people's blood sugar is hypersensitive to caffeine.
Sleep loss - Even just one night of too little sleep can cause your body to use less insulin.

Skipping breakfast—skipping that morning meal can cause blood sugar to spike after lunch and dinner.

It can be difficult to control blood sugar later in the day

Morning phenomenon—hormones rise early in the morning regardless of whether people have diabetes or not. For people with diabetes, blood sugar levels can rise.

Dehydration – less water in your body means your blood sugar is more concentrated.

Nasal sprays - contain chemicals that trigger your liver to make more blood sugar.

Gum disease — This is both a complication of diabetes and a blood sugar spiker.

Watch for other triggers that can cause your blood sugar to drop. For example, extreme heat can dilate (widen) blood vessels. This causes insulin to be absorbed more quickly and may cause low blood sugar. If an activity or food is new, check your blood sugar before and after to see how you respond.
